New York · winter city · long-haul journey

One week in New York – stepping into a film

Skyscrapers, yellow taxis, an icy boat ride and the city where I truly fell in love with flying.

A completely different world

We travelled from Budapest via Vienna and met my sister, who was living in Seattle, in New York. Our room on the 27th floor looked down onto yellow taxis and the city lights.

Everything felt larger, louder and busier than at home – sometimes a little dirty, but just as dramatic as it appears in films.

A week of iconic places

We explored Central Park, Times Square, Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO, the World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. We rode the Roosevelt Island Tram, visited Grand Central and tried bagels, pizza, hot dogs, cheesecake and doughnuts.

A freezing boat ride stopped in front of the Statue of Liberty. I could barely feel my body, but the view was worth every second.

Seeing New York from above

On our final day we visited the Empire State Building. We paid about HUF 23,000 and, even without choosing the highest level, could see the scale of Manhattan.

The flight cost HUF 202,000 and accommodation about HUF 150,000; the full week came to roughly HUF 450–500,000. New York remains my favourite journey.

My cost: about HUF 450–500,000. This is the cost of my own trip; prices change with dates, booking time and personal choices.
